In this clip, Amandeep Khurana, Member of Technical Staff at Anthropic, explains a career move that wasn't fashionable when he made it. In 2023 he gave up his management responsibilities to go back to being an individual contributor product manager, and as he says, it wasn't cool and it wasn't something a lot of people were doing. The reasoning was specific. The opportunity in front of him was in a domain he wanted to learn and knew nothing about. Had there been a management opportunity in that same domain, he might have taken it instead. But he knew he wouldn't learn much while spending a large chunk of his time on org building and management work. He wanted to be hands-on. His framing of the downside is the memorable part: worst case, he learns about a new domain. Best case, he learns about a new domain.
